About product

German 8.8 cm L/45 gun – metal barrels 1:350 (MASTER)

This is not a kit of a ship but a metal detailing accessory for a model of a warship in 1:350 scale. The set contains turned brass barrels of the German gun of 8.8 cm caliber with a barrel length of 45 calibers, that is, of the weapon that appeared on most German warships of the First World War. Turned metal has a hollow muzzle and a straight axis over its whole length; with small armament, of which there are many pieces on a deck, all the parts moreover match one another, which is never the case with plastic parts cleaned up by hand.

The real subject

The gun of 8.8 cm caliber with a barrel length of 45 calibers was among the typical light deck armament of German warships of the First World War period. It was used in both the anti-aircraft and the defensive role against light targets and it was widespread across categories of vessels from destroyers to large armored ships. The particular number and arrangement of these weapons differed between individual ships and their rebuildings, so it pays to compare the set with the documentation for the ship you are building.

Fitting and tips

Cut the plastic barrel off as close to the mount as possible, level the area and clean the hole out with a fine drill bit. Glue the metal part with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) applied drop by drop with a toothpick, so that it does not run into the muzzle. The parts are small, so work over a tray and use tweezers. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and spray it with a primer; without a base coat the paint holds badly on smooth metal. The barrels are usually installed at the end of the build, after the deck and the superstructures have been painted.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German warships of the First World War period in 1:350
  • Modelers who are bothered by split and unequal plastic barrels of the small armament
  • Those interested in historical ship artillery
  • More experienced modelers used to working with small metal parts

This is an accessory, not a model of a ship. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

For models of German warships of the First World War period in 1:350 scale, on which this light armament was widespread. Check the arrangement against the documentation for the particular ship.

The number of pieces is stated on the box of the set.

A turned part has a hollow muzzle, a circular cross-section and a straight axis. A plastic barrel is split, it loses its shape once the flash has been removed and in 1:350 it bends easily.

Super glue based on cyanoacrylate. Glue for plastic will not join metal, because it works on the principle of melting the plastic.
