About product

HMS Ark Royal 1939 1:350 (I Love Kit)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal as she was in 1939, in 1:350, from the manufacturer I Love Kit (a brand connected with the manufacturer Trumpeter). The year in the name is not decoration: aircraft carriers changed markedly during the war, so the kit captures a particular prewar configuration, not a later state. The model has a flight deck molded in one piece, the side stowage spaces rendered and over 550 parts. The package also contains aircraft for the deck: the Fairey Swordfish, the Fairey Fulmar Mk.I and the Blackburn Skua. Photo-etched parts and decals are included. The finished model measures just under 70 cm, so even in the standard ship scale of 1:350 it is a respectable piece.

The real subject

HMS Ark Royal was a British aircraft carrier completed at the end of the thirties and very modern for her day, with an enclosed hangar deck and a large air group. She fought off Norway, in the Mediterranean and on the convoys to Malta. She entered history above all through her part in the sinking of the Bismarck in May 1941: torpedo Swordfish from her deck hit the battleship in the stern and put her rudder out of action, condemning her to be caught by the British ships. Ark Royal herself ended in November 1941; after a hit from the torpedo of a German submarine she could not be saved and sank the following day.

Building and painting tips

An aircraft carrier is built differently from a battleship: the flight deck is the key. Spray and shade it before the superstructure and the island are fitted, otherwise reaching it with a brush will be hard. Do the hull and the underwater part first and mask them. Build and paint the aircraft separately, away from the ship, and set them on the deck right at the end; decide in advance how many you will display and in what position (folded wings, a line ready to take off). Glue the photo-etched railings and ladders onto finished paint with cyanoacrylate glue. Leave the rigging and the aerials to the end. Keep the weathering restrained; mild scuffing on the deck and a light wash are quite enough.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers with experience of building ships and of working with small parts and photo-etch
  • For collectors of the Royal Navy and enthusiasts of the story of the hunt for the Bismarck
  • For those who want a ship with its air group on deck as well
  • For a beginner it is a demanding project because of the number of parts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes. The kit contains the Fairey Swordfish, the Fairey Fulmar Mk.I and the Blackburn Skua, so the ship can be displayed with an air group on deck.

Because the kit captures a particular configuration of the ship of that time. Ships changed markedly in the course of the war (armament, radars, camouflage), so the year in the name is important information; it is not the later wartime state.

Just under 70 cm. The 1:350 scale is standard for ships, but an aircraft carrier is large, so reckon with a long display case.

The package contains photo-etched parts. The range of photo-etch in ship kits tends to be limited, which is why many modelers add specialized aftermarket sets of railings and steps.
