About product

The real subject

The Heinkel He 51 was a German fighter biplane of the 1930s with an open cockpit and fixed landing gear, used among other things in the Spanish Civil War. The letter B marks a later production version. An open cockpit means that the area around the seat is visible from above and from the side, so the interior is one of the most closely watched parts of a finished model.

How the set works

These are colored 3D printed interior elements that have no adhesive layer of their own. A part is cut out, dipped in lukewarm water for about fifteen seconds and slid off the paper into place, where it holds best on gloss varnish. The decal paper mentioned in the name is the backing of the printing. Do not use decal softener or setting solution; the chemistry would attack the printed resin. The parts carry the color printing and the raised relief already done, so the instrument panel, the side walls and the belts appear without the slow business of coloring in tiny dials. The set is prepared for the Roden kit in 1:48 scale.

Procedure

Paint the plastic cockpit parts in a base shade, let them dry completely and go over them with a gloss varnish such as Future, Klear or Tamiya X-22; an element holds best on gloss. Dip the cut-out part, slide it off the backing into place and align it with tweezers or a damp brush. Blot off the excess water and press the element down with a soft stick or a cotton swab from the middle toward the edges so that the relief settles into the recesses. On the narrow side walls of the fuselage work in stages and make sure the element does not overhang the edge.

Who it is for

The set suits modelers who want an open cockpit fully rendered without brush painting. The package contains only the interior elements, unless stated otherwise; the model, paints and glue are not included.

FAQ

They are, but only briefly. The cut-out part is put in lukewarm water for about fifteen seconds and slid off the backing paper into place. Do not use decal softener.

It is the backing paper off which the element is slid onto the model after a brief dip. The element has no adhesive layer of its own and is held by gloss varnish.

The He 51B kit from Roden in 1:48 scale.

Slide it off the paper, align it with a damp brush and press it down with a soft stick from the middle toward the edges; on narrow areas work in stages and help yourself with a drop of super glue.
