What the set comprises

The set holds two pilot figures in flight gear, modeled in a seated position. The posture matches the way a pilot sits in a Martin-Baker Mk.10Q ejection seat and is tied to the two-seat versions of the Mirage 2000B, 2000D and 2000N. A pair of figures in the two cockpits one behind the other does more for a finished model than most small improvements: an empty two-seat cockpit looks abandoned, an occupied one says at once that the machine is ready to fly.

Fitting into the cockpit

A seated figure is always a job tailored to one particular kit. Try the figures dry before you paint the cockpit and watch three things: that they sit back against the seat back, that the arms and legs do not foul the side consoles, and that the helmet does not touch the inside of the canopy once it is closed. If need be, sand the mating surfaces carefully; take off a little at a time and keep testing.

Painting

• Wash the figures in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent, degrease them and let them dry.
• Apply a thin coat of primer, because the shades only hold on top of it.
• Apply the paint in thin coats so that the straps and the folds of the flight suit stay visible.
• Put a dark wash into the folds and lighten the edges with a dry brush.
• Paint the figures and seat them before you close the canopy.
• Seal them with matte varnish at the end, because gloss shows twice as much under glazing.

For modelers who are building a two-seat Mirage 2000 and want a crew in the cockpit. Working with seated figures calls for patience while test-fitting, but it repays you with the view into an occupied cockpit.
