About product

P-38L Lightning in 1:48 in the markings of the 80th Fighter Squadron

The P-38L Lightning kit in 1:48 scale from the Polish brand Hobby 2000 focuses on the aircraft of the 80th Fighter Squadron of the US Army Air Forces, that is on the Pacific theater at the end of the Second World War. The twin-boom Lightning has one of the most distinctive silhouettes of the whole war, and in 1:48 both its span and its shape stand out.

The real subject

The P-38L was the last and the most numerous production version of the Lightning. Compared with the earlier aircraft it received a more powerful variant of the Allison V-1710 engines, revised cooling and a better capacity for external stores, so it served not only as an escort fighter but also as a ground-attack and attack aircraft. The combination of two engines, long range and armament concentrated in the nose of the central nacelle made the Lightning a feared opponent in the Pacific, and it was there that American pilots scored their highest totals with the type. The 80th Fighter Squadron, known by the nickname Headhunters, was one of the units that flew Lightnings over New Guinea and the Philippines.

Building and painting tips

With the Lightning, watch the geometry: both booms, the center section and the tailplane have to be lined up all at once, or the model will sit crooked. Because it stands on nose gear, add enough weight far enough forward so that it does not settle on its tail. A natural metal finish needs a perfectly smooth surface underneath; with Pacific aircraft, on the other hand, it pays to study the individual machine, because finishes and markings varied from one airframe to another. Apply the decals over an intermediate gloss clear coat.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of American fighters of the Second World War
  • Modelers interested in the Pacific theater
  • Builders who want a striking silhouette in the display case
  • More advanced modelers, because of lining the two booms up

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the last production variant, with a more powerful form of the Allison V-1710 engines, revised cooling and a better capacity for external stores.

It calls for care in the fit. Both booms, the center section and the tailplane are best assembled and aligned at the same time, while the glue is still soft.

The P-38 has nose gear, so the nose has to be weighted. Add the weight before you close the nacelle up.
