A photo-etched set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard of Obrnice near Most, intended for detailing the cargo and cabin space of a model of the Westland Sea King helicopter in the HAS.5 version in 1:48 scale. It is an accessory to a plastic model, not a model of the helicopter on its own, so the customer buys the basic kit separately. By its code series it is a full photo-etched set, that is a more extensive set than the reduced Zoom version, which covers only a selected part of the interior.
The Westland Sea King is the British licensed version of the American Sikorsky S-61, which Westland manufactured with home-built Rolls-Royce Gnome turboshaft engines. The HAS.5 version was the anti-submarine variant of the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy with modernized search and acoustic equipment. The roomy cabin behind the cockpit served the systems operators and carried equipment for long patrol flights over the sea, so it is clearly to be seen on the model through the open doors and the windows.
Photo-etched metal is separated with a sharp scalpel on a backing of hard plastic, and the bends are best made in a small bender or between two razor blades. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue in gel form or with a special glue for photo-etched parts, which gives time for setting the part in place. Before gluing it is advisable to degrease the sheet metal and coat it with a primer for metal. It pays to finish the interior and take the shine off it before the fuselage is closed up, because once the halves have been glued together most of the detail is hard to reach. A dry brush and a fine wash will draw out the edges of the moldings and the rims of the panels.
