A model of the aircraft carrier Shokaku in her 1941 form, 1:700 scale, maker Fujimi. A carrier from the opening of the war in the Pacific.
Responsibility details are not available.
Fujimi offers this Japanese carrier in the state in which she entered the war in the Pacific. The version is identified by the year given in the name of the item. The 1:700 scale is practical for large carriers, because the finished model stays compact. The contents of the package are given by the manufacturer on the packaging.
The Shokaku was completed shortly before the fighting broke out and, together with her sister ship, formed the most modern pair of Japanese carriers of their day. She was distinguished by a large fuel capacity, a strong air group and good sea-keeping. She took part in practically all the key operations of the first years of the war, repeatedly suffered heavy damage and each time returned to service after repairs. She was lost in June 1944 in the engagement in the Philippine Sea after torpedo hits and the subsequent explosion of fuel vapor.
On carriers it is mainly the upper surface that decides the result. It pays to spray it separately before gluing it to the hull and only then to add the island and the cranes. White stripes and orientation markings tend to be more legible from a decal than done freehand. Lightly brightening the center of the deck and darkening the edges gives the model depth even without complicated shading.
The item is sold as an unassembled kit with no finish. Paints, glues and tools are a separate item.
