About product

Wooden deck 1:700 — IJN Haruna with a name plate (Fujimi)

An adhesive wooden deck in 1:700 scale intended for a model of the Japanese battleship Haruna. According to the name of the item, a name plate for the ship is part of the package as well. It is a detailing accessory for a plastic kit, not the model itself: you will not find the basic kit, paints or glue in the package.

What the accessory is for

The decks of large surface ships were in reality planked and a plastic molding only suggests this structure by engraving. A veneer deck brings the real grain of wood and a natural tone that is only awkward to imitate with an airbrush. With this type of accessory the parts tend to be cut to the shape of the deck including the openings for the superstructures, the turrets and the deck fittings, so they are laid onto the finished plastic base.

The real subject

Haruna belonged to the fast battleships of the Imperial Japanese Navy. She came into being as a battlecruiser of the Kongo class and in the interwar period she went through an extensive rebuilding, after which she served as a fast battleship with a main armament of 356 mm caliber and with an anti-aircraft defense that was gradually strengthened.

Gluing tips

Before gluing, degrease the plastic deck and sand out both the unevenness and the traces of the mold parting line; the veneer is thin and every bump will show through it. Dry fit the part first and only then peel the backing film off and lay it down gradually from one side, so that no air is trapped. Press the edges down with a blunt tool, not with a fingernail. Once glued, the surface can be unified with matte varnish and accentuated gently with a heavily thinned wash.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building ships in 1:700 scale who want a realistic deck without laborious painting.
  • Builders of Japanese surface ships who complete a model with photo-etched parts and turned barrels.
  • More experienced modelers: the veneer is thin and it glues permanently, so there is usually no second try.
  • Collectors who also care about the look of the name plate on a display model.

Before buying, check that the shape of the part corresponds to your kit; wooden decks are cut for a particular model. This is not a ship model but an accessory. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is an adhesive wooden deck, that is, an accessory that is stuck onto the finished plastic deck of a model. The kit itself has to be obtained separately.

The veneer has its own natural tone of wood and does not have to be painted. A number of modelers only unify it with matte varnish once it is glued down, or accentuate it gently with a heavily thinned wash.

Wooden decks are cut to the outline of a particular model. The target kit is not stated here, so compare the shape of the part with the deck of your kit before buying.

It is adhesive. Degrease and level the base, dry fit the part, then peel the backing film off and lay it down gradually from one side, so that no air stays under it.
