The model captures the gun with its barrel, breech, shield and split-trail carriage with wheels; shells and small items of crew equipment are usually included too. The M-30 was a Soviet divisional howitzer of 122 mm caliber developed in the second half of the 1930s and taken into service at the end of that decade. It became one of the most widely used and most successful Soviet artillery weapons: it was used for indirect fire, for destroying fortifications and for fire support of the infantry. It stood out for its reliability and simple handling, which is why it was built in large numbers and stayed in service long after the Second World War, going through the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam as well. The split trails of the carriage gave stability when firing and the pair of wheels allowed it to be towed by an artillery tractor.
A gun builds faster than a vehicle, so clean work shows all the more. Take care to line the shield and the carriage up properly and decide whether you want the trails spread out in the firing position or closed for travel. Sharpen the barrel and the breech up with fine shading and bring the metal parts to life with a dry brush and a steel pigment. Dust pigments on the ends of the trails and on the wheels will suggest contact with the ground. Paint the shells and the small equipment separately to bring the scene to life.
