About product

D-558-1 Skystreak in 1:48 scale from Special Hobby

An injection-molded plastic kit of an unassembled and unpainted model of the American Douglas D-558-1 Skystreak research aircraft in 1:48 scale. The model is made in short-run technology and, according to the manufacturer, it is complemented by resin parts for the cockpit and photo-etched details such as the instrument panel and the seat belts. Two forms of the canopy are included as well. Special Hobby is a Czech brand.

The real subject

The Douglas D-558-1 Skystreak was a single-engine jet research aircraft of the late 1940s, developed for the US Navy in cooperation with the research body NACA. Unlike the later types it had straight, unswept wings and took off from a runway under its own power. It served to gather data on how a structure behaves at high speeds in the transonic range, and in 1947 speed records were set with it. The aircraft were originally sprayed a striking red, which earned them the nickname test tube.

Building and painting tips

A short-run kit has no locating pins, so test fit the parts dry and remove the sprue nubs carefully. Wash the resin parts free of mold release residue first, cut the casting blocks off and glue them with cyanoacrylate glue, and protect your airways when sanding. Finish the cockpit before you close the fuselage, and on a narrow fuselage check whether nose weight is needed. Lay the striking red down over a light base and in thin coats, otherwise uneven coverage easily appears. Use a gloss varnish under the decals and leave the finished surface glossy, which matches the look of polished research aircraft.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of experimental and research aircraft.
  • For modelers with experience of short-run kits.
  • For anyone interested in the postwar development of jet aircraft.
  • For those looking for an unusual and eye-catching model for a display case.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It was a research aircraft for gathering data on how a structure behaves at high speeds. Speed records were set with it in 1947.

A kit from molds with a limited life. The parts tend to be coarser, without locating pins, and they are test fitted dry and sanded before gluing.

Wash the mold release residue off them first, cut the casting blocks away and glue the parts with cyanoacrylate glue. Protect your airways when sanding.

Rather not. The combination of short-run plastic and resin parts assumes at least intermediate experience.
