The fighting on the Italian front of the First World War took place largely in mountainous and rocky terrain, where attacking infantry had nowhere to turn aside. From that sprang the attempt to bring plate protection back to the battlefield: breastplates and helmets with a frontal shield were to let a soldier get across the last few meters to an enemy position. The protection was heavy and restricted movement, so it was fielded with selected units rather than across the board. For a modeler it is a rewarding subject precisely because this equipment looks unlike anything else from this war — the silhouette of the figure is unmistakable at first glance.
Figures in injection-molded plastic are easier to clean up than resin ones, but the mold parting lines tend to run across visible places — along the sides of the legs, across the shoulders and across the rim of the helmet. Sand them down with fine paper and check against the light, ideally after spraying a filler base on, which brings the marks out. The metal armor is the main color motif here: do not turn it into shiny chrome but into dark steel with a matte cast, and add the sheen only on the edges, which wear would have polished. Build the uniform up from a middle value of the shade, deal with the shadows with a thin wash into the folds and with the highlights with a dry brush on the peaks of the fabric. Build the skin up over a darker base in two or three lighter layers. Matte varnish at the end, and leave the eyes and the metal edges glossier.
