A model of the German Type XXI submarine of the end of the Second World War in 1:350 scale. A subject that was the first to be designed to spend most of its time under water.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Type XXI submarine was a German design of the end of the Second World War and marked a turning point: the older submarines were in fact surface vessels that could dive for a while, whereas Type XXI was designed to live under water. The hull received a smooth, hydrodynamically clean shape without a deck gun, there were many more batteries inside and the snorkel allowed them to be charged at periscope depth. Under water it was therefore faster and had more endurance than anything before it. It saw only marginal combat, but postwar submarines were derived from it.
1:350 is home ground for ship models: it fits into an ordinary display case and still carries detail. The hull of the submarine works out at a little over twenty centimeters, so the model will find a place even on a shelf among books. How many parts the kit contains, whether it also offers a version with the hull cut at the waterline and which markings go with it are stated in the manufacturer's instructions.
On a submarine the main work is on the hull: it is a large continuous surface where every joint and every unevenness shows. Fill the seam after gluing the halves of the hull together and sand it perfectly smooth, best in two goes. Wash and degrease the model before painting. Apply the paint in thin coats so that the surface detail is not drowned, and vary the large surface slightly, otherwise it looks flat. You can display the model either on a stand or set into a water surface that you make on a base.
Paints, glue, filler and a display case are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
