The Artwox Model 1:700 veneer deck for the American battleship USS New Jersey BB-62 replaces the plastic deck with wood with the laying of the planks printed on it. It is an accessory to a kit, not a model. Intended for the Tamiya 31614 kit.

A self-adhesive sheet of natural veneer, pre-cut to the shape of the deck areas of a battleship model in 1:700 scale. The pattern of the laying of the planks is printed, so the most tedious part of the work is gone: tapping the gaps out with a scriber or painting them by hand. The veneer is stuck onto the plastic deck of the kit, which has to be obtained separately. The extent of the parts differs between sets, and the number of segments is stated on the box of the set. The set is intended for the Tamiya 31614 kit.
The USS New Jersey BB-62 belonged to the American Iowa class, the last generation of American battleships. She was marked by a long slender hull, high speed and main armament of 406 mm guns in three turrets. The ship was taken into service in 1943 and over the following decades went through several periods of active service and reserve, including later modernizations. Today she is preserved as a museum ship. The expansive wood-covered decks are among her most prominent features, which makes a veneer deck one of the most effective accessories on this type in particular.
Most of the work goes on getting around the superstructures, the barbettes and the hatches. Proceed by trying the part dry first and marking on the back with a felt-tip pen the places where it needs trimming. On the circular cutouts around the turrets a circle cutter proves itself, or patient removal in small pieces with a new blade: the veneer is thin and a blunt knife tears it rather than cuts it. It is better to leave the overlaps a hair too large and to trim them on the model along the real edge. Score the inner corners before you settle the part, otherwise the wood will crease in them.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model. The kit, glue, paints and photo-etched parts are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
