About product

The DH-103 Hornet PR.2 in 1:72 scale from AZ model

The kit represents the PR.2 reconnaissance version of the British twin-engine de Havilland DH.103 Hornet fighter in 1:72 scale. It is an injection-molded plastic model to be glued and painted, which AZ model offers alongside further versions of the same type. The contents of the sprues, the number of parts and the choice of decal schemes are stated on the box of the kit.

The real subject

The Hornet was created at the end of the Second World War as a long-range single-seat fighter with a pair of Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engines whose propellers turned in opposite directions, which limited the effect of torque. The structure combined wood and metal in the spirit of de Havilland's experience with machines of mixed construction, which made the aircraft light for its size and exceptionally fast. It did not see action in the Second World War and served only afterwards, among other places in the Far East. The PR.2 version was a reconnaissance one and carried photographic equipment; for a modeler it is interesting precisely because it differs from the more commonly built fighter versions.

Building and painting tips

On twin-engine aircraft it pays to spend time setting up the engine nacelles and the angle of the wing, because any asymmetry shows on the finished model from every viewpoint. Glue the parts with a thin plastic cement run into the seams by capillary action. Finish the cockpit and fit the glazing only after the fuselage seams have been sanded. Apply a primer before painting; it will reveal any remaining scratches. For polished or smooth natural metal surfaces, spray thin coats and check the base between them. Apply the decals onto gloss varnish and settle them with a softener; a final coat of varnish will then even out the sheen of the whole model.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of British postwar aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want the less usual reconnaissance version rather than a fighter
  • Builders of twin-engine types with experience of setting up nacelles
  • Anyone interested in the output of Czech kit manufacturers

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The number of parts and the contents of the sprues are stated on the box of the kit. It is an injection-molded plastic model in 1:72 scale.

The PR.2 was a reconnaissance version carrying photographic equipment, while the other Hornet versions were fighters and fighter-reconnaissance machines. The armament details of this kit are given in the enclosed instructions.

Rather for a modeler who has already built something. A twin-engine aircraft calls for careful setting up of the nacelles and the wing, and kits from smaller manufacturers tend to be less tolerant of quick work.

They are not. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; paints, glue and any accessories have to be obtained separately.
