About product

Airco DH-9A RAF in 1:72 scale

An injection-molded plastic kit from the Czech manufacturer Kovozavody Prostejov. The boxed version is aimed at machines in the service of the Royal Air Force, which sets it apart from the other releases of the same type. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The Airco DH.9A was a British single-engine two-seat day bomber that came about by reworking the unsuccessful DH.9. The key change was the more powerful American Liberty V12 and an enlarged wing area, which gave the aircraft back the performance lost on its predecessor. It reached combat use at the close of the First World War and its main career came afterward: for many years it served as a general-purpose bombing, reconnaissance and liaison machine of the Royal Air Force at overseas bases, where its endurance and simple maintenance were valued. In design it is a classic biplane of mixed construction with fabric covering and fixed tailwheel landing gear.

Building and painting tips

With a biplane the geometry decides. Before you fit the upper wing, let the fuselage and the lower wing cure properly and glue the struts on one at a time, so that you have time to true up the dihedral and the angle of incidence; a simple support of foam or clothes pegs helps. Paint the interior and the engine compartment before you close the fuselage up. The fabric areas come into their own with a gentle picking out of the ribs in a darker shade, while the metal panels around the engine will take a light metallic hint. The rigging is pronounced on this type, and it looks cleanest in stretched sprue or an elastic thread drawn on only once the varnish is finished. Apply the decals over a gloss undercoat and even the surface out with a matte varnish.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of aircraft of the First World War period and of the 1920s.
  • Modelers who want to try a biplane in a small scale.
  • Anyone interested in interwar British aircraft.
  • Builders who enjoy adding their own rigging to models.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Fundamentally in its powerplant and its wing. The DH.9A received the more powerful American Liberty engine and a greater wing area, which removed the performance shortcomings of the previous type.

More demanding than a monoplane. What is critical is seating the upper wing on the struts and any rigging. It pays off to work slowly and let the individual steps cure.

Injection-molded kits usually do not include rigging and modelers make it from their own thread. The exact contents are given on the manufacturer's box.

What sets it apart is the designation of the boxed version in the name. This release is aimed at Royal Air Force machines, while other releases of the same type focus on other operators.
