About product

The Edgley EA-7 Optica in 1:72 scale (Avis)

This kit in 1:72 scale renders one of the most remarkable British aircraft of the late 1970s. The Optica was designed for sustained observation from low altitude and its shape was entirely subordinated to that. The number of parts, the material of the sprues, the contents of the decal sheet and the finishes offered are stated on the box and in the manufacturer's instructions.

The real subject

The Edgley EA-7 Optica first flew at the end of the 1970s. The aim was to offer a cheaper alternative to a helicopter for traffic observation, patrol work and aerial photography. The crew sits in an extensively glazed cabin with a view approaching that from a helicopter, propulsion is provided by a ducted fan in a ring mounted behind the cabin, and the tail surfaces are carried on a twin-boom structure. The aircraft can fly very slowly and is relatively quiet, which was crucial for the observation role. Only a few were built and the machine remained a rarity.

Building and painting tips

The model stands or falls by the cabin: the glazing is dominant and has to be free of fingerprints and of residues of glue. Glue the transparent parts with a low-fume cyanoacrylate glue or with canopy glue, which leaves no haze. Unlike on ordinary aircraft the interior can be seen well from outside, so it is worth painting it carefully, including the seats and the instrument panel. Glue the fan ring once you have checked dry that it sits square, and align the tail booms against a table. Mask the whole glazing with tape and check it against the light before the final varnish.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of unconventional civil and observation aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Anyone interested in British aircraft of the 1970s and 1980s
  • Modelers who are ready to take on large glazing and a visible interior
  • Builders with experience of short-run kits

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It was designed as a cheaper alternative to a helicopter for observation. It has an extensively glazed cabin with a view in almost every direction, a ducted fan in a ring behind the cabin and a twin-boom tail.

Rather for the more experienced. The large glazing and the visible interior do not allow careless work and the build calls for careful masking.

The number of parts, the contents of the decal sheet and the finishes offered are stated on the box and in the manufacturer's instructions.
