The Ju 88 S-3 belonged to the fast S series, for which the designers gave up part of the equipment and the defensive armament in favor of flying performance. Unlike the S-1 version it received liquid-cooled Jumo 213 inverted V12 engines with an annular radiator in front of the engine, so that at a glance the powerplant resembles a radial engine, even though it is not one. The nose stayed smoothly glazed, without the ventral gondola of the older bomber versions.
A model of the Ju 88 S-3 in 1:72 scale, supplied unassembled and unpainted. The difference from the sister S-1 version lies mainly in the engine nacelles, which is interesting for a collection: both variants built side by side show how the powerplant of one type was worked with.
The annular radiator is a part on show that holds the shape of the whole nacelle; glue it carefully and check that it is concentric with the propeller spinner. Finish the interior of the cockpit before you close the large glazed nose. Mask the framing of the glazing before spraying paint. Always try the seating of the nacelles against the wing dry before filling, as that saves work sanding down in a place where the fine surface detail would be lost.
The set is intended for a modeler who builds German machines of the Second World War and wants a less common variant of the Ju 88 in the collection. The build is as demanding as is usual for a twin-engined model in 1:72 scale, but experience with filling and with masking glazing is useful.
Paints, glue and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
