What the boards are for

A tunnel gives unfinished work away sooner than anything else on a layout. The viewer bends down, looks in through the portal and, instead of a lined tube, sees bare plywood or plaster painted brown. These boards from the Heki company carry a raised relief of a red brick wall and are intended precisely for lining the inside of a tunnel along the stretch that can be seen.

Dimensions and scale

The package holds two pieces, each measuring 28 x 14 cm. The boards are intended for H0 and TT scales, that is for the ratios 1:87 and 1:120. In H0 scale the longer side of a board corresponds to roughly 24 meters of real length, in TT to just under 34 meters, so the pair will cover both walls of a decently long tunnel section.

Usage tips

First find out how far you can really see in through the portal; there is no point in lining the whole tunnel and the depth will swallow it anyway. Lay the boards on dry and set the joints out so that they fall in line with the tunnel lining. Fix them in place according to the manufacturer's instructions. Do not leave the bricks uniform in color: pick several bricks out in a darker and a lighter tone and rub a thin gray paint into the joints. The inside of a tunnel is sooty as well, so darken the area gradually from the vault downwards and leave the upper part almost black.

Who they are for

The boards will be appreciated by builders of layouts in H0 and TT scale who want their tunnel finished on the inside too. They can also be used for a cellar passage or an underpass in a diorama. The paints, the glue and a tunnel portal are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.
