About product

F6F-5 Hellcat 1:24 - late armament, covered .50-caliber Browning barrels (MASTER)

A metal set of covered .50-caliber Browning machine gun barrels, cut for the late armament of the Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat carrier fighter in the large 1:24 scale. It is not an aircraft model but a set of turned metal replacement parts of the armament. It is made by the Polish brand MASTER.

The real subject

The Hellcat was a carrier fighter with its armament concentrated in the wing. On later machines of the series the .50-caliber machine gun barrels were carried in a covered arrangement, that is without the exposed cooling jackets typical of the earlier layout. That difference in the arrangement is exactly what this set addresses, and the words late armament in the name refer to this particular layout.

Fitting and painting tips

The 1:24 scale changes the rules. The parts are larger and heavier, so a thin drop of super glue may not be enough; with barrels of this size a slow-setting epoxy is safer and it also gives time to line all the barrels up in one plane. In a large scale any asymmetry is visible at once: two barrels standing out a millimeter apart look like a building fault in the display case. Drill the holes to suit the shank of the metal part and fit the barrels dry first. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and apply a primer meant for metal; in a large scale, though, it often pays better to keep the metal surface and only darken it with bluing or a dark patina, because real metal on a barrel of this size looks more convincing than any coat of paint. The muzzle of the barrels has a real bore, which is judged most strictly at close range, so do not let paint run into it.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of F6F-5 Hellcat models in the large 1:24 scale.
  • Modelers who want a genuine metal surface on the barrels of a large model.
  • Those who need a guaranteed identical projection of all the barrels on multi-barrel armament.
  • Collectors of large scales, where detail is judged from close up.

The accessory is supplied unpainted and unassembled. Glue, paints and the basic model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. These are metal armament barrels meant to replace the plastic parts on a model in 1:24 scale that you already own.

It means barrels without exposed cooling jackets, that is the layout matching the late armament of the machine. The set is cut for exactly that arrangement.

The parts are larger and heavier and the joint takes more load. Epoxy is stronger and, above all, it gives time to line all the barrels up in one plane before it sets.

In 1:24 scale real metal usually looks better than paint. It is enough to degrease it and darken it with bluing or a patina. If you do paint, use a primer for metal and watch that no paint runs into the bore.
