Porsche 962C Jägermeister 1:24 — a Tamiya plastic kit

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Porsche 962C endurance prototype in the well-known Jägermeister sponsor livery, in 1:24 scale from the Japanese maker Tamiya. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The exact part count, the extent of the decal sheet and the number of finishes offered are not stated; check them on the packaging.

The real subject

The Porsche 962C was the culmination of the line of Group C sports prototypes that followed on from the 956 type. Compared with it, the 962C received a lengthened front section and a pedal box moved behind the axis of the front wheels, so that the car met stricter safety rules. Power came from a turbocharged flat-six engine behind the driver's back, and the design rested on a rigid monocoque and on the downforce created by the tunnels in the floor of the body. The 962C cars raced in the second half of the 1980s in endurance events in Europe and in Japan, both as works entries and above all in the colors of private teams. That is where a range of striking liveries came from, including the orange combination with the Jägermeister brand.

Building and painting tips

Smooth the body carefully first and spray a good white base, because the deep orange otherwise does not cover evenly and the plastic shows through it. Paint with an airbrush in thin coats, let it dry thoroughly and lay down a gloss coat before the decals. Settle the sponsor lettering with a decal softener so that it follows the edges and the recesses, and finally seal it with another coat. Finish the interior, the frame and the engine section before you close up the body. The engraved lines can be brought out with a thin wash, but do not overdo the weathering, because circuit cars went out clean and glossy.
