Semi-armor-piercing AN-M58 bombs of 500 pounds, six pieces in 1:32. A printed ResKit set for aircraft of the American and British air forces of the 1940s and 1950s.
Responsibility details are not available.
A semi-armor-piercing bomb differs from an ordinary high-explosive one in the ratio of steel to filling: a thicker casing lets it punch through a ship deck or a concrete shelter and only then burst. The AN-M58 filled that role in the 500 pound weight class. The set brings six printed pieces intended for large aircraft scales. In shape it matches an ordinary high-explosive bomb, so in practice it was told apart mainly by the markings on the casing.
American units used it against vessels, harbor structures and reinforced shelters, where a general-purpose bomb would only tear the outer layer open. The same ordnance was used by British squadrons equipped with American hardware. During the Korean War semi-armor-piercing bombs came back over railway bridges and tunnel portals. A hit under the vault of a shelter had a far greater effect than a burst on the surface, even though the charge itself weighed less.
First remove the supports from the print, then polish the surface with a sanding sponge so that the riveting stays legible. An airbrush and a thin coat of primer are suitable; a contrasting band on the casing adds credibility and breaks up the unbroken surface. Strengthen the attachment to the pylon with a short wire pin. Small lettering gives the whole thing scale and breaks up the unbroken surface.
The set covers the ordnance alone. Obtain the carrier, paints and fixings separately.
