A pair of castings of a heavy aircraft bomb in the version with thermal protection of the casing, that is in the form that American nomenclature lists as the BLU-117. The package aims at large models of carrier machines and the parts are completed by the BSU-36/B tail unit.
On the deck of an aircraft carrier a fire is the worst imaginable event. Experience from deck accidents led to the casing of ordnance being given a layer that slows the heating of the filling and pushes back the moment when it could ignite by itself. At the same time the body received a less sensitive explosive. From the outside the change shows mainly in the texture and the shade of the surface, so two otherwise identical bombs are told apart on a model precisely by the finish and the lettering. This form was carried above all by naval machines, from the Harrier through the Tomcat to the Hornet.
The surface of a protected casing is not perfectly smooth but rather slightly grainy, and that can be achieved with a lightly dusted final pass of paint from a greater distance. The base must be flawlessly sanded, though, otherwise flaws in the casting will blend with the intended texture. Color bands and lettering belong on a flattened surface only.
The product serves to complete a finished kit, which it does not itself contain.
