1:350 SMS Emden - 5,2 cm SK L/55 guns - (resin, PE and turned parts) - (8pcs)

5.2 cm SK L/55 guns for the SMS Emden in 1:350 scale

This set from the manufacturer MASTER replaces the light artillery armament on a model of the small cruiser SMS Emden. According to the name the package holds eight pieces, and it combines parts in resin, photo-etched sheet and turned metal components. In 1:350 scale these are very small items, on which the difference between a plastic molding and a turned barrel tells at once on a finished model. The set is not a kit of the ship but an accessory for one.

The real subject

The SMS Emden was a small cruiser of the Imperial German Navy from the period before the First World War. Besides the main caliber it also carried light guns of 5.2 cm SK L/55 caliber, of which there were eight on board; the number of pieces in the set matches that. This light armament was distributed around the superstructures and the upper deck, so on a model it is clearly visible from practically every angle.

Fitting and painting tips

Degrease the metal parts before painting and spray them with primer, otherwise the paint will not hold. Bend the photo-etched parts over an edge or a bending tool, not between your fingers. Separate the resin parts from their casting blocks with a saw and level the mating surfaces. For gluing use cyanoacrylate glue applied with a pin or a thin wire, otherwise the small parts will drown in surplus glue. Painting is more convenient before fitting; once they are glued on, touching the joints up and unifying the whole with a weak wash is all that is needed.

Who the set is for

• for builders of the SMS Emden model in 1:350 scale
• for modelers who want sharp barrels instead of plastic moldings
• for more experienced builders used to working with photo-etch and small parts
• for display-case and competition ship models

The set is an accessory for a kit, not a stand-alone model. The kit, the glue and the paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
