A plastic kit of the Explorer 1 satellite in 1:6 scale from Glencoe Models, an anniversary edition marking 50 years of space exploration, with a rotating stand and a cutaway interior.
Responsibility details are not available.
This injection-molded plastic kit depicts the first American artificial satellite, Explorer 1, in the large 1:6 scale. The anniversary release marks 50 years of space exploration. The set holds a rotating stand with a crank for comfortable display from every side, a variant with an exposed cutaway that shows the internal instrumentation, and decals. The finished model stands roughly thirty centimeters tall.
Explorer 1 was the first satellite of the United States, launched on February 1, 1958. It carried the instruments thanks to which the Van Allen radiation belts surrounding the Earth were discovered. It was the American answer to the launch of the Soviet Sputnik and a significant milestone of the early space age. The satellite had an elongated cylindrical shape and was carried aloft by a Juno series rocket.
Glue the parts with thin plastic cement, filling and sanding the joints if needed. Metallic shades and matte clear coats suit a convincing look; bring out the internal instrument section with shades and light edge highlighting so that the detail in the cutaway shows. Try the mechanism of the stand for smooth running before painting.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
