A resin accessory for models of the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II in 1:72 scale. It is a large drop fuel tank of 610 gallons in the late form, which Reskit ties in the name to the F-4F and F-4G versions. The set is part of a wider line that the manufacturer also offers in 1:48 and 1:32 scales and in versions for further Phantom variants.
The F-4 Phantom II was a two-seat, twin-engined combat aircraft that became one of the most widespread Western machines of its class in the second half of the 20th century. The F-4F version came about for the Luftwaffe, while the F-4G Wild Weasel V was an American specialized adaptation for the suppression of enemy air defenses. Both machines commonly flew with large drop tanks, because range and time over the target were among the decisive parameters in this class. The tanks take a larger part in the silhouette of a machine on a model than you would expect, and their shape differs between early and late examples.
Wash the resin before the build in lukewarm water with detergent. Cut the casting block away with a saw, level the parting face on sandpaper laid on a flat surface and protect your airways when sanding. Cyanoacrylate glue holds the joints. A tank is a large smooth surface, so every unevenness shows on it; before painting it pays to spray a primer and check the surface against the light. It is usually painted in the scheme of the machine, and the transitions and the fuel staining around the filler cap can be suggested with a fine wash.
