This injection-molded plastic kit captures the P-51C version, that is the Mustang with the Merlin V12 engine and with the original shape of the fuselage, on which the spine continues behind the cockpit all the way to the tail surfaces. With Second World War fighters the 1:72 scale suits building a larger collection, because the models take up little room. The maker is Hobby Boss.
The North American P-51 Mustang won its reputation only after the original engine was replaced by a license-built version of the British Merlin with a two-stage supercharger. It was exactly this change that gave the aircraft its performance at high altitude and the range that let it escort bomber formations over Europe. The P-51B and P-51C versions are technically the same form and differ only in the factory that built them, so the designation tells you nothing about different equipment or a different airframe shape. Watch out for a common misunderstanding, then: these are not two different development variants. The cockpit with its limited rearward view was in practice modified by many units with a bulged canopy.
In a small scale the cleanliness of the surface decides everything: fill and sand the gaps at the wing root and on the belly of the radiator. The cockpit needs only to be suggested, but it pays to bring the seat and the instrument panel out with a dry brush. A natural metal finish calls for a smooth dark surface and airbrushing, while olive schemes forgive more. Apply the decals of the large identification stripes over gloss varnish and use a decal softener, so that they draw down onto the surface detail.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
