An injection-molded plastic model of the Chinese fifth-generation fighter Shenyang J-31 Gyrfalcon in 1:72 scale from Trumpeter. The set captures the modern twin-engine machine with its pair of tail surfaces and shaping with a reduced radar signature. Besides the plastic parts, the box also holds a small photo-etched sheet and decals for two markings; the subject matches the demonstrator shown at a Chinese air show.
The J-31 (also known as the FC-31 Gyrfalcon) is a Chinese stealth fighter demonstrator developed by the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation. It is a medium-sized single-seat aircraft of twin-engine layout with two canted vertical tail surfaces and internal weapons bays, which are typical features of a design with reduced observability. The machine was presented as a counterpart to the heavier fifth-generation fighters and is intended for modern air combat and possible carrier service.
Glue the plastic parts with liquid modeling cement for plastic, and fill and sand the fuselage joints carefully, because even small imperfections show on stealth shapes. Bond the small photo-etched sheet with super glue (cyanoacrylate). Apply a base coat of primer before painting; for the gray schemes of modern fighters, gentle shading of the panels and discreet accenting of the engraved lines with a wash work well.
