The Reskit SUU-16A gun pod with an open gun bay in 1:72 scale is a 3D-printed cannon pod for the wing pylons of the Phantom, supplied one piece per package.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Ukrainian firm Reskit prints the SUU-16A podded cannon in 1:72 scale in a striking version with the bay open, which lets the mechanism of the weapon inside stand out. According to the name this is the variant for mounting on the wing pylons, and the package holds one piece. The fineness of 3D printing shows in the small surface details that conventional production could not manage.
The SUU-16A pod housed the six-barrel 20 mm M61A1 Vulcan rotary cannon and gave gun armament back to aircraft that had left the factory without it. It became famous in Vietnam on the pylons of the C and D versions of the Phantom, to which it gave a chance in maneuvering combat once it became clear that guided missiles alone would not settle an air engagement. The sight of an exposed Vulcan under the wing is therefore a rewarding subject on any Vietnam-era parking apron.
An open bay deserves careful painting: bring out the barrels with graphite pigment and liven up the area around the exposed parts with a fine dark wash. The outer surface of the pod is usually in the color of the aircraft's undersides, but check photographs of the particular machine. Remove the print supports by nipping them a little away from the part and sand the surface smooth.
