Gloss Sea Blue is a deep dark blue with a pronounced cast toward gray. The number FS 15042 is a reference into the American standard of shades; the first digit sets the degree of sheen and a one in it means a gloss finish, which also matches the word Gloss in the designation. The shade is associated with the aircraft of United States naval aviation from the later part of the Second World War and the postwar years, when the machines were sprayed in this blue overall, with no upper and lower part in a different color.
An overall blue finish is rewarding in that the model holds together as a whole, but at the same time it shows up every surface imperfection mercilessly. More careful preparation than for camouflage schemes divided into fields therefore pays off: fill and sand the joints so that no step appears under the uniform coat. The shade also serves well as a base for grading the panels, because the differences show subtly in a dark blue and do not look garish.
Choose the thinner and the thinning ratio according to the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging, and use the thinner intended for this range. Stir the paint thoroughly before use, as dark pigments settle to the bottom. Apply it in several thin coats and let them set between one another. A gloss surface is a good base under decals, which will not silver on it. The matte look of the later years is achieved by a final overcoat, not by altering the shade itself.
The package contains the paint. Thinner, brushes and a model are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
