The designation FS34102 belongs, in the Federal Standard color system, to a matte medium green. This was one of the three camouflage tones that the US Air Force introduced in the 1960s for aircraft deployed over Southeast Asia. On the upper surfaces it blended with a darker green and brown, while the underside stayed light gray, or black on aircraft flying at night. Fighter-bombers, transport aircraft, and helicopters all flew in the same combination, so the shade has wide use in model building.
This is a paint from the water-thinnable Aqueous Hobby Color acrylic line. Compared to lacquer lines from the same manufacturer, it has a milder odor, and fresh residue can be rinsed from tools with plain water. It dries to a matte finish, so a separate gloss coat is usually added underneath decals.
Shake the bottle thoroughly before use, as the pigment settles to the bottom on standing. For spraying, thin the paint to roughly the consistency of milk and apply in two to three thin coats; a single heavy coat will fill in the fine panel engraving. A more faithful tone is achieved over a light base, since green looks darker on bare dark plastic than it really is.
The standard shade number is also useful when buying aftermarket decals, since manufacturers often state which shade a scheme relates to. This lets you match the paint and decals without a lengthy comparison of color charts.
