The five-digit number 36081 comes from the color standard that the armed forces of the United States follow. Its first digit carries information about the gloss, and a three in that position means a matte surface, so this is a dark gray with no gloss. The shade became established at the time when the colorful camouflage of combat aircraft was replaced by inconspicuous gray finishes designed to let a machine blend with the sky and with the background seen from above.
Besides airframes, the same gray suits bomb bays, racks, pods and rocket armament, where it tends to be darker than the surrounding surface. Modelers also gladly take it wherever they need a neutral dark tone with no blue or brown cast, that is, for tires once lightened, for rubber covers and for the insides of ventilation ducts.
The jar holds 10 ml. The line is designed above all for the airbrush; on smooth plastic it is better to thin it with Mr. Color Thinner than with water. A matte surface forgives fewer mistakes than a gloss one, because every drop and every overspray is recorded in it, so spray lightly and preferably in several passes. Before decals are applied it is a good idea to varnish the area with a gloss varnish, otherwise air will be trapped under the decal and a matte frame will appear around it. Once the decals have dried, the gloss is knocked back with a matte varnish, which gives the finish a uniform look.
With the lighter grays of the same brand it forms a pair for a two-color scheme, in which the darker tone covers the upper surface and the lighter one the sides. The transition between them is made freehand from a greater distance so that the edge stays soft.
