A white that really covers

Pure white is among the oldest and most used shades in the whole Gunze range. White is at the same time the most demanding pigment of all: it builds up slowly and a single heavy coat can drown fine engraved detail. The manufacturer therefore mixes it thicker and expects the modeler to lay two or three thin coats over a light undercoat.

Mr. Color is a lacquer line on a nitro base. That brings fast drying, a very hard and smooth film and resistance to later masking with tape. Water does not work as a thinner. For the airbrush, roughly one part paint to one or two parts thinner of the same brand works well, together with lower pressure and a shorter distance from the surface.

The dried surface stays glossy, so decals hold on it without any unpleasant silvering of their edges. It comes into its own on the fuselages of civil airliners, on naval superstructures, on invasion stripes and as an undercoat for yellow and red tones, which cover poorly on their own.

A cured coat takes overpainting with enamel and with water-thinnable paint. The opposite order is not reliable, because the solvent of a lacquer paint softens whatever lies beneath it. Tools are cleaned with the thinner or the cleaner from the same family of products.

Brush application is possible if the paint is thinned less and the strokes run in one direction. On large areas spraying is clearly safer, because brush marks show up more in a gloss film than on a flat surface. It is good to store the bottle upright and to wipe the neck after every pour, otherwise a dried rim keeps the cap from closing and the rest of the contents thicken faster than they should. Thickened paint can be saved with a few drops of solvent and honest stirring.
