Dark Sea Grey matched to the British standard for color identification, item number 638. A choice for modelers who want an exact shade.
Responsibility details are not available.
The British standard for color identification was created so that a paint manufacturer, an aircraft factory and base maintenance could all understand each other without lengthy descriptions. Every shade in it has its own number, and item 638 covers exactly this Dark Sea Grey. The paint manufacturer keeps this standard-matched variant alongside its traditional shade, which is why the number appears directly in the name.
It suits builders working to period specifications who want to be certain they have the right tone. It is used on Fleet Air Arm aircraft, postwar British types and models where two related greys sit side by side and their difference needs to be visible. Anyone instead following period photos of faded aircraft usually adjusts the tone slightly afterward.
The cured solvent-based film is very tolerant of further work. You can safely apply water-based varnishes, acrylic washes and oil paints for highlighting panel lines over it, since the thinners in these layers will not disturb the base coat. It can take masking tape after a few hours and reaches full hardness the next day. Smaller areas can also be handled with a brush, but the stroke must be finished in one go. It is thinned with the lacquer thinner from this paint group.
