A plastic kit from the compact line of the Taiwanese manufacturer Freedom Model Kits. It is not a model in a classic scale, but a deliberately distorted, egg-style stylization: the fuselage is markedly shortened and stocky, the cabin with the nose is enlarged against reality and the wings and tail surfaces stay large, so that the aircraft remains recognizable at first sight. The result is a small model which fits on a shelf and on a workbench and yet holds the characteristic silhouette of the Super Hornet. The colors and the markings match the American naval strike fighter squadron VFA-195, nicknamed the Dambusters.
The Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet is a single-seat carrier-borne multi-role aircraft of US naval aviation. It is derived from the design of the older F/A-18 Hornet, but it is markedly larger, with a reworked fuselage, an enlarged lifting area and angular leading edges to the air ducts for the engines. It serves at once for the tasks of air combat and for attacks on ground and surface targets, and it can carry external fuel tanks and refuel in flight. The squadron VFA-195 belongs among the units deployed from aircraft carriers and its colors are among those popular with collectors.
Compact models are rewarding for a quick build, but the shortened parts mean short glued joints, so it pays to glue with a thin cement for plastic in small sections and to let the joint dry through thoroughly. Before painting, matte the surface down with fine abrasive paper or a sponge and apply a base, as otherwise the gray aviation paint holds worse on smooth plastic. Spray the gray shades with an airbrush in thin layers, so that the panel lines stay noticeable. Apply gloss varnish under the decals, and once dry go over it with matte, so that the finish looks uniform. Prepare the cockpit and mask the glazing before the fuselage is sprayed.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
