Six thousand is no longer about removing material but about the look of the surface. The step follows on from the coarser ones in the same range and prepares an area for a polishing compound or for a gloss varnish. Marks from the previous sanding disappear and the surface takes on an even satin look with no visible scratches.
Modelers reach for this fineness on clear parts, where a scratch on a canopy has to be smoothed away, and on chrome and metallic-painted surfaces and anywhere the result is meant to reflect. It also serves for evening out paint between coats when a speck of dust has caught in a dried surface.
Work in short strokes in one direction and rinse the material between them. On clear parts it helps to wet the surface with water and to work in small sections so that it stays under control. Once the scratches have gone, finish the area with a polishing compound or with a coat of varnish that fills the remaining microtexture.
Nobody can tell the neighboring fine steps apart by eye, so it pays to write on the back of each piece or to return it to its original packaging. Reaching for a coarser step in the belief that it is a finer one does damage to a painted surface that can only be put right by respraying the whole part.
