About product

Model Craft Masking Tape — 18 mm × 18 m

Modeling masking tape, 18 mm wide, with an 18-meter roll. It is used to cover areas that should stay in their original shade during painting — canopies, wheels, cockpits, glazing, and the dividing lines of two-tone camouflage. It is not a kit or a model accessory, but a modeling supply that you use again and again while painting.

Why modeling tape and not ordinary paper tape

The difference is significant, and many people underestimate it. Ordinary office or packing tape has high tack — when pulled off, it willingly rips off the layer of paint or primer underneath, turning hours of work into a repair job. Modeling tape has low, controlled tack: it holds firmly enough to prevent paint from bleeding underneath, but comes off cleanly, without leaving adhesive residue. It also has a cleanly cut, sharp edge, so the transition between colors is crisp rather than ragged, and the paper backing is pliable — it can be pressed onto a shaped surface.

What the 18 mm width is good for

  • Quickly covering large flat areas — wings, fuselages, hulls, body roofs.
  • Fewer overlaps and seams than narrower tapes, meaning fewer places for paint to bleed through.
  • Fewer strips needed — one wide strip covers an area that would otherwise take several strips of narrow tape.
  • A base for two-step masking: outline the edge with narrow tape and cover the rest of the area with this wide tape.
  • Usable outside the model as well — airbrush work on paper, craft projects, small household tasks.

Usage tips

Always press the tape down with a fingernail or a toothpick along the edge where the color transition will occur — that is exactly where the quality is decided. Spray in thin coats perpendicular to the edge, so paint does not get pushed under the tape. Remove it while the paint is only dry to the touch, and pull it back over itself at a shallow angle, not straight up.

Who the tape is for

  • Modelers spraying with an airbrush or a spray can.
  • Builders of aircraft and vehicles with larger continuous surfaces.
  • Anyone who needs a reliable tape that won't pull off paint.

FAQ

We don't recommend it. Ordinary tape has too much tack and, when peeled off, pulls off the paint and primer underneath. Modeling tape has low tack — it holds firmly enough to prevent bleeding, but comes off cleanly without leaving adhesive residue.

For large continuous areas — wings, fuselages, hulls, body roofs. A single strip covers what would otherwise take several strips of narrow tape, and it creates fewer seams for paint to bleed through. For tight curves and small parts, a narrower tape works better.

Ideally shortly after spraying, when the paint is dry to the touch but not yet fully cured. Pull it back over itself at a shallow angle, never straight up — this gives the cleanest edge.

Neither. It is a modeling supply — a consumable used for painting. It has no scale and is not intended for any specific model.
