Finished scenery steppe growth in a semi-dry version. The vegetation is neither fully green nor completely dried out: some of the tufts have already yellowed and dried, while others hold their green color. It is precisely this transitional state that is the commonest on real steppe and that reads as the most natural in a model. The material is simply laid down and glued.
The semi-dry version is the most universal of the whole range, because it does not tie a scene to one narrow moment of the season. It suits dioramas from summer as well as early autumn, field tracks, treeless slopes and plains and anywhere it is meant to be apparent that the soil is poor and there has been little water. It takes the company of dust pigments and rutted soil well.
Lay the growth only onto finished, painted and dusted terrain. Try the intended spot dry first, tear or cut the piece to an irregular shape as needed, since a sharp straight edge does not arise in nature. It is glued with PVA wood glue, and a drop of cyanoacrylate will serve for a firm hold on a hard substrate. Hide the transition between the growth and the surrounding soil with a sprinkled fine scatter, grit or pigment, so that the growth does not look like a glued-on carpet. You can match the coloring with a light overspray of heavily thinned paint from above or by dusting with pigment, always only very lightly and once dry. Make the color transition between semi-dry steppe and an adjoining green area gradual, best of all by blending smaller pieces of both growths in a band rather than with a sharp edge.
