About product

Tamiya XF-61 Dark Green (Enamel) - flat enamel paint, 10 ml

This is a modeling paint, not a kit. Tamiya XF-61 Dark Green from the enamel (synthetic) range is a solvent-based paint in a bottle of 10 ml. At Tamiya the letters XF mean a flat shade, so the surface has no sheen once dry.

The shade and its typical use

A saturated dark green is one of the most versatile shades of the whole range. The manufacturer recommends it above all for British and Soviet armor. Among builders, though, it has made its name mainly as the green component of late German camouflage: from 1943 on, green and brown patches were sprayed over a base of XF-60 Dark Yellow (Dunkelgelb), and XF-61 is the most common choice for that green. XF-60 plus XF-61, with a brown added, therefore make up the classic pair, or trio, for the three-color German scheme. It also serves for military vehicles in general, for crates and gear, or as the dark tone of vegetation on a diorama.

Note: enamel, not acrylic

Tamiya issues the number XF-61 in two parallel ranges. This item is the enamel: a solvent-based (synthetic) paint thinned with X-20 thinner (without the letter A). The acrylic version of the same number is water thinnable and uses X-20A. The thinners are not interchangeable.

Use

  • Airbrush and brush. For spraying, thin it with X-20; the manufacturer gives roughly 2 parts thinner to 10 parts paint as the starting ratio.
  • For camouflage patches, spray heavily thinned paint at lower pressure from a short distance and you will get soft transitions. Hard edges of a scheme are made with masks or with modeling putty.
  • Before decals, coat the area with a gloss varnish; a flat surface causes a white film around the carrier film. The flat look comes back with the final clear coat.
  • Dark greens tend to swallow detail, so brighten large areas with modulation and add washes and pigments.
  • Do not apply lacquer paints directly over enamel that is not fully dry.

Who the paint is for

For modelers of military vehicles, from German camouflage in combination with XF-60 through British and Soviet vehicles to dioramas and accessories. Suitable for every scale and for anyone who prefers synthetic paints with a smooth surface that brushes well.

Safety: flammable liquid. The vapors irritate the airways. Use only in well ventilated spaces, provide protection for the airways (a respirator) and protect your skin and eyes. Keep out of the reach of children and away from sources of ignition.

FAQ

It is an enamel, a solvent-based (synthetic) paint thinned with Tamiya X-20 thinner, that is without the letter A. The acrylic version of the same number XF-61 is water thinnable and uses X-20A. The thinners are not interchangeable.

The manufacturer recommends it for British and Soviet armor. Among modelers it is best known as the green component of late German camouflage, sprayed as patches over a base of XF-60 Dark Yellow (Dunkelgelb).

Thin the paint heavily with X-20, lower the pressure and spray from a short distance, which gives soft transitions. For hard edges of the scheme use masks or modeling putty.

At Tamiya the XF prefix means a flat shade. Coat the area with a gloss varnish before decals, because a flat surface produces a white film around the carrier film. The flat look is restored with a final clear coat.
