A belt of shrubs along a track or on the boundary of a plot is one of the oldest ways in which ownership was marked out in European and Anglo-Saxon country. It held cattle in, protected the soil from being carried off by the wind and at the same time gave shelter to birds. For a modeler it is an element with great power: a single strip of green divides an area into fields, hides a badly made transition between two terrains and above all gives a scene scale, because a viewer's eye knows how high a hedge usually is beside a person.
The package holds one strip 19.6 cm long and of a height that runs from 2.54 to 6.03 cm. The uneven height along the length is deliberate; a trimmed hedge is only regular in a garden, while in open country it grows unevenly.
The strip can be laid down whole or divided into shorter sections with a gap, a gate or a field entrance put between them. It is exactly the interruption that makes the composition convincing, because a continuous line from edge to edge gives away that this is a piece of merchandise and not a piece of landscape. A bend in the line where the slope of the terrain changes also looks interesting.
Before gluing it pays to stand the hedge dry and look along the direction the scene will be photographed from. A hedge readily hides a detail that matters and, conversely, serves well as a screen in front of the joint between base boards. A combination with a few grown trees along the line matches the way field boundaries really look.
