An injection-molded plastic kit of the third generation of the Mazda RX-7 sports coupe, that is the version with the body designation FD3S, in the specification of 1996. The 1:24 scale is standard for automotive models. The maker is the Japanese firm Aoshima, and the kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted, to be glued and painted.
The third generation RX-7 arrived in 1991 and, compared with its predecessors, went for a rounded, aerodynamically clean body with pop-up headlights. Under the hood worked a two-rotor Wankel engine with a pair of sequentially arranged turbochargers, and the power went to the rear wheels. The car was designed with an emphasis on low weight and balanced axle loads and remains to this day one of the icons of the Japanese sports scene of the 1990s. The specification from the middle of the 1990s differed from the original version in details of equipment and aerodynamic features.
The curves of the RX-7 body have practically no flat surface, so the mold parting lines are the main trap here. Never sand a seam straight away with fine paper; level it first with a file or a sanding sponge of coarser grit and only then move to finer ones and to wet sanding. On curved surfaces sand in small circles and keep checking the shape with a finger, because the eye will not spot a seam on a curve but the touch will. Rather fill the joints of the roof with the sides and the transition around the pop-up headlights with liquid putty first, let it off-gas for a day and level it. Before painting, spray the whole part with a filler primer, otherwise the seam will appear only under the gloss paint, when it really is too late.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
