Die-cut masking sheets for the Bf 109 in the F-4 version in 1:32 scale. They cover the cockpit canopy outside and inside and add three insignia masks.
Responsibility details are not available.
The F-4 version is considered the aerodynamically cleanest Bf 109 of all. The rounded wingtips, the removed tail bracing struts and the 20 mm MG 151 engine cannon made it a machine that turned and climbed well. On the Eastern Front JG 54 flew it from the summer of 1941, and its green heart emblem became one of the best known badges of the whole war.
The eastern theater had a recognition key of its own: a yellow band around the rear, yellow undersides of the wingtips and often the yellow lower part of the engine cowling as well. In winter a white temporary paint was added, which the mechanics sprayed right at the airfield and which came off in tatters after a few weeks. The crosses were not painted over, so under the flaking white they stayed sharp and dark.
The package covers the canopy from both sides and adds three insignia masks, that is one more than is usual with sets for this type. It is prepared for the Hasegawa kit.
On winter finishes: mask the glazing before you start abrading the white layer. An abrasive sponge would otherwise dull the clear part and in this scale it can no longer be polished out.
Three insignia masks also give freedom to anyone building a machine with the cross placed unusually on the underside of the wing. It pays to offer the film up dry and check the position against a photograph, because the spacing of the markings differed from machine to machine.
The Friedrich is rewarding as a subject also because round windows behind the cockpit and a different shape of the rear glazing appeared on it for the first time. Anyone building a later G-6 beside it will see that difference at once, and that is exactly why the masks of the two versions cannot be interchanged.
