A set of diorama accessories in 1:35 scale from MiniArt. It is neither a vehicle model nor a figure but equipment for a scene: road signs in the form they had in Italy in the 1930s and 1940s. Small things like this do a lot of work in a diorama — a single well-placed sign tells the viewer where the scene takes place without your having to build a whole block of houses.
Signs are set at the edges of roads, at junctions and at entrances. It pays not to overdo the number: in real space there were few of them in any one place, and an overcrowded roadside looks artificial. Sink the posts into the base rather than merely sticking them on the surface — a hole drilled into the base holds more firmly and allows a sign to be tilted by a few degrees, which gives the whole scene its naturalness. When putting the composition together, think about the vertical relationships: road signs are a good scale reference beside figures and vehicles, and their height above the terrain therefore has to be right.
Cut the parts off the fret with a sharp tool and clean up the remains of the gates, so that the posts stay straight. Degrease the whole thing before painting and spray a primer. The faces of the signs deserve a smooth, even coat, because every irregularity shows on a small area. Once that is done, the weathering comes: a thin wash in the corners, lightly suggested rust at the foot of the post and dust pigment on the lower third. It is the wear in particular that tells a sign apart from a toy. The exact number and list of the individual signs is stated on the packaging of the set.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
