About product

Metal barrels 20.3 cm SK C/34, 1:350 scale (Flyhawk)

A set of eight turned metal barrels of the German naval gun of 203 mm caliber designated SK C/34. The product belongs among turned barrels and accessories for ship models in 1:350, so it is an accessory for a plastic kit rather than a ship model. Eight barrels correspond to four twin turrets, which was the usual arrangement of the main caliber of German heavy cruisers. The metal parts have a straight axis and a drilled muzzle and need no sanding of a parting line.

The real subject

The 20.3 cm gun designated SK C/34 formed the main armament of the German heavy cruisers built in the second half of the 1930s. The guns were mounted in pairs in rotating turrets, two forward and two aft. For a modeler the important point is that the barrels are long and slender and on plastic parts they bow easily, especially if the model stands in a display case for a long time.

Fitting and painting

Cut the plastic barrel off right at the turret mask, level the area with a file and open the hole out with a micro drill exactly to the diameter of the pin. Drill along the axis of the part; the slightest deviation shows on a long barrel as a visible misalignment. Glue the metal in with cyanoacrylate glue or epoxy and make sure that both barrels of one turret have the same elevation. Degrease the parts before painting and apply a primer for metal. Fit the finished barrels only once the hull is complete, so that they are not bent during handling.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German heavy cruiser models in 1:350.
  • Modelers who want the main caliber with no parting line and with a real muzzle.
  • Collectors finishing a model for a display case.
  • More experienced builders working with metal parts.

This is an accessory for a model, not a kit in its own right. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Eight barrels correspond to four twin turrets, that is the complete main caliber of a typical heavy cruiser.

No. These are separate metal barrels that replace the plastic parts on a finished or part-built model.

Open the hole out exactly along the axis of the plastic part, and while gluing, level both barrels of one turret to the same elevation while the glue is still setting.

Degrease the parts and apply a primer intended for metal, ideally a self-etching one. Without it the paint rubs off.
