About product

Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar-III 1:48 - a detail set of the engine

This item is not a kit of an aircraft. It is a detail accessory: a cast model of the Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar radial aero engine in the III version, 1:48 scale, from the brand Armory. It is used to substitute for a simplified engine from a plastic kit or as an exhibit of its own on a base. The contents of the package and the number of parts are given on the packaging of the set.

The real subject

The Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar was a British air-cooled radial engine of the period between the world wars, laid out as a fourteen-cylinder two-row radial. That two-row arrangement was unusual in its day and is also the main reason the engine is worth showing: the cylinder covers of the two rows interleave and from the front a rich structure of fins, rods and exhaust stubs is visible. The III version was among the earlier forms of the range.

Building and painting tips

The parts of this range are cast, so with resin castings begin by washing them in lukewarm soapy water - the residue of release agent from the mold is the main reason paint does not hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc and never break them; the fine cylinder fins crack easily. When sanding resin wear a respirator and sand wet, as the dust is unpleasant. It is glued with super glue; ordinary cement for plastic has no effect on resin. Painting: a base in a dark metallic color, then a dry brush in a lighter metal over the edges of the fins and finally a dark wash into the recesses. Finish the exhaust stubs with a combination of rust and burnt steel - it is precisely they that draw the eye on an engine.

Who the accessory is for

  • For modelers building interwar British aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • For those who want an exposed engine with the cowling open
  • For collectors of detail sets and standalone exhibits of machinery
  • It is not a model of an aircraft and not a kit of an aircraft

This is a detail accessory, not a complete model. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a standalone model of the engine intended as a detail accessory or as an exhibit on a base.

The set is in 1:48 scale; suitable kits are given on the packaging of the set.

With resin castings super glue works. Ordinary liquid cement for plastic does not dissolve resin and the joint would not hold.
