An injection-molded plastic kit of the most widely built version of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighter. The model in 1:48 scale offers fine recessed surface engraving and a well detailed cockpit and engine section. The molds of this Dragon series follow on from older Japanese toolmaking and at the time of release they were among the best available in this scale; some boxings therefore also held extra materials beyond the plastic.
The Fw 190 was a single-seat fighter with a BMW 801 radial engine which from 1941 joined the Luftwaffe's standard Messerschmitt Bf 109s in service. The A-8 version appeared in 1944 and became the most numerous variant of the whole A series. Compared with the earlier versions it received heavier armament, revised equipment and the ability to carry an auxiliary fuel tank or an increased ammunition supply. The typical armament consisted of a pair of synchronized 13 mm machine guns above the engine and 20 mm cannons in the wing. A-8 machines were used above all against bomber formations, and there were also sub-variants with additional armor or with equipment for night operations.
Start with the cockpit and the engine, which have to be finished and painted before the fuselage is closed. Glue with liquid cement for plastic and it is better to sand down the joints on the leading edges and under the fuselage. Apply a primer before painting; the typical German fighter schemes of 1944 combine a light underside with a gray-green upper surface and a mottled pattern on the fuselage, which is best sprayed with an airbrush at low pressure or over masking putty. Lay a gloss clear coat compatible with the paint used under the decals, then add a wash into the engraved lines once it has dried and seal it with a matte coat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
