Cut masks for building the MiG-15 jet fighter in 1:48 scale. It is neither a kit nor an airplane model but an accessory for the painting stage. The masks are stuck onto the areas that are meant to stay free of paint and are taken off once it has been sprayed. The shapes are cut in advance to the parts of the model, so the tedious sticking down of strips of tape and trimming them with a scalpel does not arise.
The MiG-15 was a single-engine jet fighter with a swept wing, one of the first of its kind in series production. Air was taken in through a circular intake in the nose of the fuselage. For a modeler the defining feature is the cockpit canopy: it has a markedly domed, almost circular cross section, plus a separate windshield with armored glass. Another laborious spot is the intake duct in the nose, which is normally painted a different shade from the surrounding surfaces.
A domed canopy is the classic hard nut: straight tape forms folds on it, and in every fold a channel appears through which paint bleeds. A cut mask respects the shape, but it needs to be seated correctly. Offer it up dry, line it up with the engraved frame and press it with a blunt stick from the highest point of the dome downward, so that the material does not bunch at the top. In sharply curved places it helps to warm the mask slightly with a hairdryer before working it down; the film then holds its shape better. Before the target shade, spray the edge with a thin coat of base or clear paint, which closes the gap. Lay the paint on with an airbrush in thin coats. Take the mask off as soon as the paint is dry to the touch, not after a longer time, when the edge peels away.
The set is an accessory for a plastic kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. Check the extent of the set against the manufacturer's details before you buy.
