A photo-etched detail set from the Polish maker Aber in 1:48 scale aimed at the fenders of the early Tiger I heavy tank, that is the Sd.Kfz. 181 or Pz.Kpfw. VI Ausf. E, in the variant used by the Afrika Korps. It is not a kit but an accessory to a plastic model, which you have to own separately. The metal fenders have a thickness matching the scale and, unlike plastic, they can be bent and deformed.
The Tiger I was a German heavy tank with an 88 mm gun, in action from 1942. Early examples differed from later production in a range of details — the shape of the fenders, the arrangement of the tools, the exhausts and the hull fittings. Vehicles deployed in North Africa had several features dictated by the environment: changes to the air filtration and a different make-up of the external gear. The fenders were of thin sheet and in the field they bent, tore and fell off, which you can see clearly in photographs from the campaign.
Take the parts out with a scalpel and run the bends in a photo-etch bending tool along the scored lines. Glue them with cyanoacrylate glue. It is exactly on the fenders that metal serves its main purpose — leave them slightly bent, with a torn corner, or leave one out altogether, following period photographs. Degrease the metal before painting and apply a primer for metal. The African version suits sandy shades backed by pronounced dust weathering and light pigments on the lower areas.
This is a detail accessory, not a standalone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
