An injection-molded plastic kit of the Messerschmitt Bf 109F-4/B fighter-bomber in 1:72 scale from the Czech maker AZ model. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the package holds plastic sprues, decals and instructions. The nickname Fridrich belongs to the whole F series, which modelers consider the cleanest shape this famous fighter ever had.
The Messerschmitt Bf 109F, nicknamed Fridrich, brought rounded wingtips, an aerodynamically cleaner nose and the deletion of the tailplane struts compared with the earlier E series. The version marked with a slash and a B was a fighter-bomber: it carried a bomb rack under the fuselage and was used by specialized bomber flights of the fighter wings. It was sent on fast attacks against ground and shipping targets, after which the aircraft carried on as an ordinary fighter once the bomb was released. It is precisely the combination of the slender airframe with a bomb under the fuselage that gives the model its unmistakable look.
The kit is short-run in character — dry-fit the parts and count on fine-tuning the joints with sanding and putty. Finish the cockpit before you close the fuselage. The glazing has complex frames, so die-cut masks will help. Painting is rewarding: gray upper surfaces combined with a light blue underside, and on machines used over the Mediterranean and in Africa often supplemented by yellow or white quick-identification markings. The decal sheet offers several specific machines; choose according to the scheme in the instructions. The bomb under the fuselage is fitted at the very end.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
