About product

QMT 1:72 McDonnell F-4B and F-4N Phantom masking set, wheel bays

The package contains self-adhesive masks cut to the outline of the wheel bays of a model in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit. The masks come into play only after the interior of the bay has been sprayed, when they cover the finished area and make it possible to spray the rest of the model with no risk of the shades mixing. According to the name the set is intended for the naval Phantom versions F-4B and F-4N.

Pressing the edge down decides the result

The most common mistake in masking is not a badly shaped mask but an edge that has not been pressed down. It takes only a mask standing a fraction of a millimeter off at the edge, and thinned paint gets under it by capillary action. A blurred, misty transition appears, and that is hard to repair. So the edge of the mask is run over with a blunt tool around the whole perimeter after it is applied, and on the curved parts more than once. Only then does it make sense to reach for the airbrush.

The real subject

The F-4B was one of the first production naval versions of the two-seat Phantom, and the F-4N came out of a later upgrade of F-4B machines with changes to the airframe and the systems to extend its life. For modelers both versions serve as the classic naval shape of the type, with a pronounced cranked wing and two engines.

Usage tips

Thin the paint rather less; heavily thinned paint creeps under a mask more readily. Spray in thin coats with a pause between them. If you are going to apply a clear coat after spraying, allow for the fact that the coat also gets under a badly pressed edge, so the mask has to sit properly from the first layer on. Once it is off, check the transition from the side against the light, as that is the best way to spot an unevenness.

Who the set is for

  • builders of the naval Phantom versions in 1:72 scale
  • modelers who want a clean edge with no paint creeping under
  • those who finish a model with a clear coat and need reliable masking
  • builders who prefer a finished die-cut to cutting by hand

This is an accessory to a kit. The model itself, the paints and the glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Most often because the edge of the mask was not pressed down around the whole perimeter after it was applied, or because the paint is thinned too much. Running a blunt tool along the edge and spraying thinner coats both help.

Yes, provided the edge holds well. A clear coat gets under an edge standing off just as easily as paint does, so the pressure needs to be checked beforehand.

The name states both the F-4B and the F-4N, which have the same wheel bay arrangement. Check the actual extent of the sheet against the die-cut in the package.
