An extended MH models masking set focused on the markings of a model of the British Short Sunderland Mk.V flying boat in 1:72 scale. Unlike masks for the glazing, it is not applied to the clear parts but directly onto the sprayed camouflage. The result is markings that are part of the finish rather than a film stuck on the surface. That is especially useful on large models of flying boats, where a large decal would settle over the uneven surface only with difficulty. The target kit is Special Hobby.

The real subject

The Sunderland was derived from a civil flying boat and in British service it became the typical machine of long-range patrol flights over the Atlantic. The Mk.V version received different engines from the earlier variants, which brought greater reliability on long patrols at high takeoff weight. The hull with its boat bottom, the high-set wing with four engines and the tall tail surface give the model dimensions that take up a good piece of room in a display case in 1:72 scale. Markings on an area like that are visible from every angle.

The application procedure

Let the camouflage cure thoroughly and only then lay the masks down. The surface should be smooth, and with a markedly matte finish it works well to spray the area with gloss varnish so that the mask settles and paint does not run underneath. Spray perpendicularly and thinly, each color separately. Take the mask off as soon as the paint has set and then even the transition out with a final coat of varnish.
